A theme with variations premiered during Piano Week 2020 in a live stream concert. HALF IMAGINED creates a landscape of sounds based on a crystalline theme of carefully selected chordal sonorities. The opening chord puts the listener into a kind of dream of past remembrances, wistfully playing with the dreamer's sense of reality. It's the sort of dream that falls between the trues past, and the past of our invention. The subconscious mind plays delicately with fact and fiction. The theme is really just the opening seven chords. Several variations follow, each one playing with a different set of colors and textures. Twice the form is interrupted by glorious departures, triumphantly laying the seven-chord progression aside. But eventually the theme returns to end the work in the mind's poignant beauty.
